Three Queer Mice

SupaFriends alumni Jen and current SupaFriends member Leroy co-facilitated a workshop called "LGBTQ Youth Making Videos and Building Community" for an audience of over 20 youth and teachers. The workshop included a screening and discussion of two SupaFriend's videos, "Three Queer Mice" and "Keisha Knows."

White House Honors G.A.P.

Michelle Obama with Global Action Project's Meghan McDermott and Rayhan Islam

On Wednesday, October 20, the White House recognized Global Action Project for its effectiveness in developing creativity and fostering academic success by engaging young people in the arts and humanities. First Lady Michelle Obama presented the prestigious national award to Global Action Project. "This year's awardees are shining examples of using success in the arts and humanities as a bridge to success in life," said Mrs. Obama. "Through them, our young people are not only discovering new talents and finding their creative voices, but also becoming better students, better leaders and better citizens. It's not surprising that most of the young people participating in these programs, including those in some of our most at-risk communities, graduate from high-school and go on to college." G.A.P. Video selected for Tower of Youth Festival

One of G.A.P.'s newest videos, "Beauty and the Box," was selected from hundreds of entries to be shown at the 13th Annual Tower of Youth Film Festival. It will be seen by over 1,000 youth in Sacramento, California on October 12th.

"Beauty and the Box," produced in spring 2009 by G.A.P.'s Urban Voices youth producers, is a haunting narrative short that chronicles the trials of a young woman tormented by social standards of beauty.

G.A.P. at the Asian American Film Festival

"That Ain't Right," a film that chronicles the Urban Youth Collaborative's campaign for students' right , and America's Next Top Immigrant, a satire narrative about the notion of the American Dream, are screening at the Asian American International Film Festival this Saturday, July 25, at noon.

G.A.P. Joins Historic White House Briefing

On May 12, 2009 Global Action Project joined an historic White House Briefing on the role of social justice arts and cultural organizing in catalyzing support for a forward-looking national agenda. Executive Director Meghan McDermott was among 60 artists and creative organizers who met with White House officials to learn about key Obama Administration initiatives and to facilitate the inclusion of cultural strategies as an integral part of the economic recovery, community renewal and civic engagement.
